I'm leaving this comment to let you know I'll be offline for a while due to my house moving this weekend-my ISP isn't sure how long it will be before I'm back online. I want to let you know that I will be watching the television news, and hoping to hear of a peaceful and satisfactory resolution to this terrible crisis.

And, of course, praying for you and everyone there.

Peace-it can happen!

The press here in the US is reporting that Israeli missles hit the UN building and 2 UN peacekeepers are dead, with possibly two more. The Israeli ambassador to the UN is adamant that the missles were not intended to hit the UN building, but the Lebanese (and others) are insisting the UN building was targeted on purpose, although they can't say what the purpose would be.

Now Hezbollah is saying they will send missles deeper into Israel.

The above is as of 2200 Eastern Time, USA.

The media focus seems to be primarily on the Americans being evacuated, when not on the UN building being hit, and reactions to the hit, or reporting a combined death toll of over 500.

A US poll I saw yesterday shows the narrowing of opinion as to the response by Israel to the provocation of Hamas and Hezbollah; today, too, is the first time the two events have really been linked as though the two sets of kidnapping were concentrated and combined efforts, as opposed to two separate events.

This is spiralling.

Take care, Ilan, you and yours are in our prayers.

Here in Slovenia we're getting really off-colour reporting on the national TV station. Our reporter in the Middle East has "ventured into Hezbollah controlled territory to bring us breaking news on the ground."

I was quite amazed when she referred to the Hezbollah as "rebels" and "resistance fighters". Either she's very partisan or very much unaware of the Hezbollah organization's background.

To luka:
are aware of HA background? what is it? maybe there are resistance fighter after all! Maybe thats why Lebanon is not giving them up.

However, the HA background does not change what Israel has to do. Israel had to do the same regardless of HA being the Labanon army or the resistance fighters or a terorist organisation.

Lebanese officials, meanwhile, confirmed that four U.N. observers were killed by an Israeli airstrike on their post Tuesday night.

The End - Scenarios.

1. Nasrallah is killed.

Three weeks into the war there is no sign for the two kidnapped soldiers. There is also no sign of the Hizbollah leader. More than 50 Israeli citizens were killed and the numbers on Lebanon side are getting close to a thousand. 200 hundred of them are Hizbollah soldiers.
One morning the Hizbollah television opens its broadcast with a special announcement. The anchorman declares that the "Lord of Resistance", Sheikh Nasrallah, was killed by an Israeli bombardment on his hideout during his campaign of liberation of Lebanon.
Immediate reaction of Pikud Ha-Oref (rear area headquarters) – All Israeli citizens from north to central Israel, are asked to rush to the nearest bomb shelters. Hizbollah is ready to use its doom's day weapon. During the next two days 7 Zelzal missiles land in central Israel – heavy destruction and 45 die in the attack. Katyusha missiles are constantly falling at northern Israel. Long lines at the airport. Eilat is filled with Tel-Aviv refugees.
Hizbollah is proud with the outcome of its attack and the losses they caused to Israel; however there is a big confusion and despair in the organization. Both sides trying to find a way to declare cease-fire. The Lebanese parliament gives the opportunity – After agreement with Hizbollah, they turn to Israel through the French – "Hizbollah is ready for cease-fire if Israel will declare the end of the operation". 24 hours later, cease-fire is announced.
"The resistance won't surrender", promises Nasrallahs heir. "We will be back in Jerusalem, praise Allah".

Likelihood – Reasonable scenario. Israel has a long score to settle with Nasrallah, and now is a great opportunity. His disappearance won't sadden the international community, and some leaders of the Arab world will be relieved.

2. Uprising against Hezbollah

Such a rally in Beirut was not seen since 2005 and the murder of Hariri. Back then, the demonstrators sent Syria home. Today they demand to send the army to the south. Close to a million young men, women and children join the protest. Prime Minister Siniora watching the protest from his office and decides to act. He summons the American ambassador and asks his support to a near suicidal action. "I'm leaping into the water" he says "but I demand your full support. Lebanon needs diplomatic, financial and political help. If I'll die – save my family." The ambassador consults with his operators and delivers a positive respond. "You'll get everything you need".
The next day, Siniora deploys troops on the southern border. Officers that object are immediately dismissed. Siniora declares that those carrying a weapon and don't work for the government – criminals. "You have a choice" He says to Hezbollah" dissolve into the national army or get arrested." The Lebanese street is excited. Hezbollah in dilemma. The attempt to bring out their supporters to the streets gets a weak response. The only way to stop the progress is by force.

Likelihood – This scenario is the dream of Israeli government and one of the goals of the campaign. Iran and Syria will do their best to prevent such move, even if that means turning Hezbollah into an army of rebels. Hezbollah will declare all those favor the initiative traitors and friends of Israel. The chance for this scenario, in the nearest future, is very slim.

3. Fragile understandings and wearing out

September. Israeli satellite locates a truck full of ammunition making its way from Syria to Hezbollah bunker. The truck is destroyed before they get to their destination. In respond, a few minutes later it's a rain of Katyusha missiles over Kiryat Shomnah.
Four month into the operation, the situation in northern Israel is not promising. Hezbollah, beaten and bruised. Without its posts and weapon silos the organization is back to being an armed militia. Trying to preserve the successes of the operation, once in a while Israel air strikes the newly build posts and weapons deliveries. Hezbollah responds with Katyushas and fire over northern settlements.

At the northern settlements the uneasiness and resentment grew. International diplomats come and go in attempt to form an agreement between IDF and Hezbollah. Israel demands Lebanese army on the border. Lebanese Prime Minister blames Israel with war crimes. "How dare they!" he shouts at the American ambassador "After ruining our country, they want us to send an army to keep their border? A Lebanese that will even look their way will be considered a traitor."

Likelihood – Reasonable scenario. Even if Hezbollah's elite and their weapon silos will be destroyed, the motivation to continue the campaign against Israel will be high.

4. International Force

United Nations Secretary Kofi Annan is satisfied after his meeting with US ambassador, John Bolton. For the first time, Bolton agrees to launch international force to Lebanese border. In a few days, the proposal is voted on in UN. According the proposal the troops will be allowed to use "reasonable force" but not to disarm Hezbollah. Nasrallah objects and claims that the proposal is an insult and it damages Lebanon's autonomy.
United Nations Security Council enforces the assembly of the force on UK, France, Ukraine and Italy. Soldiers of the force, about 3500 of them, equipped with armor and helicopters, land in Lebanon in October and immediately head south. Two Italian SUVs drive over roadside explosive charges. Four soldiers are killed. Hezbollah declares the birth of a new campaign against "international enemy". Washington declares Hezbollah a terrorist organization.

Likelihood – This is the favorite option of the international community, although it's conditioned to the weakening of Hezbollahs armed abilities. Another flaw – Foreign government won't rush to send their troops to the "Lebanese Mud".

5. Negotiations with Damascus

August. The campaign is in its second month. Israeli intelligence picks up transmissions between Damascus and Nasrallahs bunker. In those transmissions Damascus suggests to the leader of Hezbollah to test the possibility of cease fire. Syria begins to feel impatience.
Two days later. Turkish Prime Minister sends a special advisor to Jerusalem that comes with a direct message from President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad – "Syrian President says we can start negotiations. Calm the sector, he will calm Hezbollah". Israelis are skeptic. Olmert summons intelligent elite.
Head of intelligence, Amos Yadlin, estimates that the Syrians ask to exploit the chaos, get rid of Hezbollah and begin negotiations over Golan Heights. Olemrt not convinced – "Will Iranians get in our way?". They will ,Yadlin answers. But they will understand that there is Syrian national interest is involved.
Israel gives the Turks green light. In two days, AMAN (Israel's central, overarching military intelligence) officials secretly meets with Assad's brother in Ankara. The talks are to the point and intense, but optimistic. Assad clarifies he would like to negotiate the whole Golan Heights. AMAN officials says it's possible but Hezbollah must be "calmed down" first. At the end, all agree on graded cease fire and beginning of secret channel of negotiations.

Likelihood – Too optimistic. Not likely that Syria will abandon Hezbollah in its hardest hour, without explicit Israeli promise to withdraw from Golan Heights. Such promise won't be given in current atmosphere. Furthermore, US might try and intercept such move as a part of her Iraqi pressure on Syria.

6. War with Syria

After five days of investigation, Ali Hassan, a member of Hezbollah intelligence brakes up and tells his investigators all they want to hear. "Both of your kidnapped soldiers are in Syria for quite some time now" he says" We've transferred them there the night the campaign began."
The frustration in Tel-Aviv is enormous. If Hezbollah moved the kidnapped to Syria, there is a reasonable reason to believe there are already in Iranian hands. During late hours consultation Olmert decides to deflect the fire towards Damascus. IAF planes are sent to attack Syrian armored division. 7 Syrian soldiers are killed. Damascus is furious. Two Scud missiles are fired towards Kirya base in Tel-Aviv. One missile hit the target, destroying buildings and killing 13 soldiers. Second hit the nearby mall, killing 25 people and causing heave fires in the train station.
Israel declares general reserves draft. Columns of armored forces are doing their way to Golan from both sides. Syria declares state of emergency over country. Another Israeli attack on Syrian military targets kills 13 soldiers. Patriot missiles are successfully intercepting Scuds. "Israel is in it toughest hour" Says the Chief of Staff Dan Halutz. "The enemy declared war on us"

Likelihood - Far-reaching scenario. Syria is inferior to Israeli military power and fears war. Israel is afraid to break the fragile quiet over Golan and not interested to "shake" Assad from his chair. Both sides know they have much to loose.

Just a quick note, Ilan. I read the scenarios and one thing strikes me: they are all pretty passive, accepting things are out of our hands. But as I see you posted on Beirut Notes, you yourself are engaging a debate with ordinary people in Lebanon and elsewhere. This is in itself a positive step, however small.

On a strategic note, you leave out Palestine from the scenarios when the problem was sparked by incidents there.

---

No they were not, but to get them back you don't engage a full invation of a country and attacking the airport and factories.
There is no doubt that it was HA assult to initate this crisis.

But simply it's israel in appropriate self-defence which more look like an invasion than anything else.

if you look at it that way, then you can say the katyushas started after israel started bombing beirut.

but it will change nothing. the poor civilians are getting hurt in Israel and Lebanon. and not that many people are doing anything to put an stop to it

At 2:22 PM, July 25, 2006, Anonymous michel said...

I have to say, Ilan, that I agree with anonymous 1:19. It's a bit cheeky to say that the bombings should continue because of the recent shellings, when the shellings are a reaction to the bombing.

But as I've said elsewhere, it is neither normal nor acceptable that northern Israel live under the threat of shellings. Ultimately, the situation has to be normalised. That will only come about through the normalisation of relations with Lebanon and Syria.

The path chosen by the Israeli military goes off the meter in terms of extremity.

At 1:54 PM, July 26, 2006, Anonymous Liron - Israel said...

I'm afraid you are both wrong on the account of the shelling and bombing.
The Kidnapping of 2 soldiers and killing of 8 was preceeded with a high number of Katyusha missiles fired upon all of the north of Israel. This was the smoke-screen for this action (the kidnapping) and the reason it took so long for the Israeli army to find out what exactly has happened.

Thank-you for posting this. My comment is about the first potentially staged scene-who shot the driver? If the wound is to his right thigh, the shooter had to be someone in the cab of the vehicle, or in the crowd of Palestinians clustered on the right side of the vehicle, right?

Or are Israeli guns able to circumvent the laws of physics?

Weekend report

SYRIAUnofficial sources state that Syria prepared its ground and air forces on high alert ready to attack. Pilots are sleeping in cockpits.
Scud, Zelzal, Fajr 3, Fajr 5 (most of them can reach Tel-Aviv) and Katyusha missiles are already stationed and pointed towards Israel. Assad issued the order after Iranian military commanders have decided to directly intervene in Hezbollah efforts by supplying them constant weapon shipments by air.
Assad's assumes that Israel will try to intercept those shipments over Syrian land. In that case, he will attack.
On the other hand, on Friday, Sheikh 'Abdullah bin Jabrin issued a verdict where he states that it's not allowed to support, join or even pray for Hezbollahs success.

LEBANON - Eleven days into war, 362 Lebanese were killed. IDF sources state that at least half, ~180, were Hezbollah terrorists. We also learned that Hezbollah used Lebanese troops and intelligence in their attempt to sink the Israeli missile boat (4 Israeli soldiers were killed in that incident).
Last night, IDFs infantry and armored forces have crossed the Lebanese border.

ISRAEL – Glimpse of hope – Reports from Gaza that Palestinian organizations may agree to cease the Qassam fire towards Israeli cities – "In order not give Israel the excuse to escalate the fighting".
Not all organizations agree with the understanding, but Palestinian council hope that all will keep it. If that is the case, the agreement should be effective immediately from tonight.
The Israeli side is skeptic and demands the return of Gilad Shavit.
More about Israeli situation - in Daily Update post (link below).

EUROPE – Hundreds of protests against Israel.

Truth is a gray area.
For example -
He is saying that those kidnapped brothers were hid from the press.
In that case why the news about them appear here and here? (Hebrew here and here)
Second, he claims Palestinians kidnapped the soldier (Gilad Shalit) as a revenge for IDFs' kidnapping those brothers - but the tunnel under IDFs post was dug long before the so called "kidnapping".
Third... Chomsky is not a big fan of Israel (Or USA in that matter).

At 1:37 PM, July 23, 2006, Blogger free soul said...

yes, it is a gray area like when you say that half the dead were hizbollah !! how could that be while you are targetting roads, houses, media, power stations and even a church!! i believe hizbollah soldiers were praying in the church then!!

half the dead were kids

At 2:34 PM, July 23, 2006, Blogger Ilan said...

Free soul - Both you and I don't have the exact numbers. Even numbers are players in this war because each side will try to use them for their own advantge. I say "half of them were Hezbollah" - you say "half of them were children". We both rely on media for this information, and we all know that media is the grayest of the gray (at best) when it comes to our (middle east) region (or any other place in that matter).
You say we are targeting roads, houses... And what do you think the Hezbollah is targeting?

At 12:32 AM, July 24, 2006, Anonymous janjo said...

I guess you are right, but compare the equipment that Israel has to what Palestinians have? Maybe the tunnel has been there for a long time but they would use it when it's needed the most.

But I think there is a something more important that needs attention. Even if we assume that they wanted to do that kidnapping long time a go, still why there is double standards? Why if Palestinians kidnap someone (a soldier) it is so bad but if the Israelis do the same (civilians) it is ok?

I agree with you that these are just numbers but we also have seen the pictures of dead children, so many of them. There are some grey areas but there are some areas which are too bright but we are still blind to them.

I still have not understood why Israel is destroying Lebanon rather than HA. I don't know how much of coverage you have there but the scale of bombardon is unbelievable and inappropriate and unacceptable.

I don't know what will happen once this madness is done, but I know it won't get any better. It never has got better after any war. It is just making the gap between people bigger and bigger.

Beless you all.

Whilst your intentions are obviously noble, the problem with 'No War' is that it usually implies, 'Live with the Status Quo'.

...Or find better ways to change reality (Status Quo) - Diplomacy.

At 5:16 PM, July 20, 2006, Anonymous hezi said...

yeah, i'm sure diplomacy would return our kidnapped soldiers back and prevent such incidents from happening again.

did it ever occur to you that:
a. we fully extracted all diplomatic paths to both crisis?
and
b. that our enemies are using are diplomatic naive approach against us?

i say, ENOUGH of this subserviency!
sometimes you are ought to fight back!

Ilan, good on you. God on you, dammit. War ain't bringin' the kidnapped back, it's just takin' more folks to the other side.

Whenever you see a war you should ask: "cui bono" - who benefits? Guess who? Uzi. AK. Glock. Etc.

I say no war is a just war ... and no peace is just either. The only difference is the number of people killed. And that's a tally that makes things DEAD clear to me.

sure luka, until islamic jihad will reach you and then all the humanity in the world wont help.

'stepping to the other side' can just as easly happen to your beloved ones, even if they are not at war. for example a bombed bus, perhapse train, maybe a plane.... and all that becuase afew wackos decided they are heretics for not believing in muhamad.

keep on smoking.

I've been thinking about this for days, and keep coming back to this:

HAMAS INVADED ISRAEL, KILLING AND KIDNAPPING ISRAELIS.

HEZBOLLAH INVADED ISRAEL, KILLING AND KIDNAPPING ISRAELIS.

WAR IS NOT HEALTHY-PERIOD.

But sometimes...sometimes...'cause if you don't, the world becomes one big prison.

Ilan, I have a son your age, since 2000 my biggest fear is that he would be sent to war.

My nephew, 40, is a tank commander, I worry about him 24/7.

My grandson just turned two years old in May.

More than almost anything, I want my son, his son, to never go to war; I wish my nephew was a pediatrician.

But my father and my uncles were in the infantry from 8 December 1941 through 1946-Pop was wounded in both theaters, my uuncles were in the pacific. My mother (British) lost several family members in the years 1939 on-some were killed in the Blitz.

They didn't want to go to war, but if they had not...

I'm so sorry.

Hezi - How can you be sure of anything? Will violence bring back the kidnapped soldiers? Or maybe their bodies?

Luka – Thanks mate!

Joe – What is your solution? Total annihilation? Full re-education of the Islamic public?

Fox's mom – Thank you for your words.

At 11:08 AM, July 21, 2006, Anonymous Luka said...

Joe: I understand you perfectly. But ... to be honest ... I don't see much "Islamic Jihad" coming this way. I see more of us and our bombs going the other way.

Let's also be honest - I would far prefer a world at peace than a world at war.

And now I'm going to go fetch a bagel for breakfast.

Front and Home Front

Ninth day of fighting and the end just doesn't seem any closer. Soldiers and civilians are dying on both sides of a war that nobody wants. But everybody needs. Or at least, that's what we should think… I think…
Today in Ma'ariv (Israeli newspaper) IDF official was quoted about the "End of crisis". There are 5 sections that must be fulfilled before this "ending" –

  1. Total distinction between the crisis in Lebanon and the kidnapped soldiers – Total distinction between the situation with Hamas and the kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit.
  2. Southern sector – The return of the kidnapped soldier, general ceasefire, international conference.
  3. Northern sector – Information(!) about the kidnapped soldiers, general ceasefire, Hizbollah transfers the soldiers to Lebanon government which immediately enters a negotiations state with Israel.
  4. Lebanon army takes control of its southern border with Israel and takes full responsibility of the southern area of Lebanon.
  5. Hizbollah disarms, leaves southern Lebanon and focuses its activity in political arena.

What do we learn from this table?

From Israeli side – The fact that that IDF is willing to settle with only information about the kidnapped soldiers show that IDF officials understands that they won't have enough time to find and retrieve to soldiers – lack of quality intelligence information – a problem which in this state, might cause heavy losses on our side as soon as infantry troops will enter Lebanon (already entered?).

From Hizbollah side – No chance to any of that as long as Nasrallah lives - Which is now number one priority for IDF.
IAF bombed Hizbollah bunker tonight. 23 tons of explosives. As it seems now – he wasn't even near the site. "Lack of quality intelligence" anyone? – The fight continues as it seems. Unfortunately to us all.

And what about the home front? As it seems Israelis and Lebanese found ways to deal (in a way) with the crisis.

It would be nice to pursue confirmation for reports of two Palestinian civilians (one a doctor), reportedly apprehended--without charge, from Gaza--by IDF soldiers the day before Hamas captured the Israeli soldiers.

War in Numbers - Israeli side

It's the second week of fighting and here are some number -

  • Israeli civilians – Wounded and killed - 18 killed and 476 wounded - 3 civilians (2 of them - 8 and 10 years old brothers) and 2 soldiers were killed during the day today.
  • Israeli soldiers killed - 12 – 8 soldiers were killed during the kidnapping, 4 soldiers were killed in the attack.
  • Katyusha missiles fired towards Israel – 750~800
  • Rockets missile fired towards IDF posts - ~1000
  • Targets attacked in Lebanon - ~1000
  • Number of IAF attacks - ~1500
  • IDF artillery shells fired - 6000 from 36 cannons
Unfortunately, I don't have the numbers (it's sounds horrible) of the Lebanese side... But, I can guess that the number of wounded and killed is much higher.

Update by Luka (Thanks)- BBC is reporting at least 230 Lebanese killed so far - As far as I know, most of them, civilians.

Update - A survey conducted today - 94% of citizens in northern Israel - Support the continuation of the attack on Hizbollah. Some say they won't mind to spend another few weeks in shelters as long as it resolve the situation.

During the week I will post a review and explanation about the whole opperation at north.

Ilan: Are you SURE that Israel has 26 civilian casulties so far?

There were the 8 from the train yard, 2 in Nahariya, 2 in Meiron, 1 in Tzefat

(Those are the ones I recall so far)

At 2:00 PM, July 19, 2006, Blogger Ilan said...

Luka - Thanks for the info - If you got more numbers, please post. I will update.

Jameel - There are contradictive numbers in different newspapers. I used Ma'ariv numbers as they were published today. But you are right, I was also suprised by the high number. Mistake?

At 3:47 PM, July 19, 2006, Blogger Jameel @ The Muqata said...

Ilan: yes, I think its a mistake and maariv meant civilian and IDF numbers together. (and that still looks high)

You should know by now not to trust the Israeli MSM ;-)

At 4:43 PM, July 19, 2006, Blogger Ilan said...

Jameel @ The Muqata - Yeah. I've checked the numbers again and updated it.
It seems that the number of killed soldiers will grow - There is unofficial information about at least two soldiers killed in Avivim.

When it's going to end?

At 3:11 AM, July 20, 2006, Anonymous Luka said...

Ilan: I'm following the BBC reports ... and checking up some other sources slowly.

apparently there have been 60 casualties in Lebanon and 6 in Israel today.

The numbers are probably off - how ever many there are, tho, is too many.

From over here, it is hard to understand why the government there has not come out against Hezbollah-to us it seems clear Hezbollah started this, after watching Hamas take the first soldier.

This is the one of two things my co-workers (most are Muslim) and I agree on completely, the second being we need to add our voices in ongoing prayers for the innocent-especially the little ones.

Thank-you again for re-opening Little Israel, although I truly wish the circumstances different, happier!
